Summary:Hugging Face has introduced MTEdit, a novel dataset designed for multi-turn image editing, addressing the challenges of error accumulation and visual drift in traditional sequential rollout methods. MTEdit employs a packed trajectory canvas (PTC) generation pipeline to jointly produce multiple editing states within a unified visual context, reducing quality degradation across turns. The dataset includes 500K multi-turn trajectories with up to 8 turns and an average of 5.38 turns per trajectory,

Background and Challenges

Multi-turn image editing aims to modify images based on a sequence of instructions, aligning better with human-AI collaborative creation. However, constructing high-quality multi-turn training data is challenging. Traditional sequential rollout methods often lead to error accumulation and visual drift, degrading the final editing quality.

MTEdit's Solution

To address these issues, Hugging Face introduces MTEdit, a dataset built using a packed trajectory canvas (PTC) generation pipeline. PTC generates multiple editing states within a unified visual context, reducing quality degradation across turns. MTEdit covers both step-wise and context-aware editing scenarios and includes 500K multi-turn trajectories, with up to 8 turns and an average of 5.38 turns per trajectory, making it one of the most extensive datasets for multi-turn image editing.

MTEdit-Bench Benchmark

To evaluate the capabilities of multi-turn image editing models, Hugging Face also releases MTEdit-Bench. This benchmark assesses models' abilities in:

  1. Instruction Following: How well the model understands and executes editing instructions.
  2. Content Consistency: Whether the edited image retains the core features of the original.
  3. Visual Drift Resistance: Preventing significant visual quality degradation during editing.
  4. Context Utilization Across Turns: Effectively leveraging historical editing information for subsequent edits.

Experimental Results

Using MTEdit, Qwen-Image-Edit-Causal was fine-tuned to obtain Qwen-Image-MTEdit. On MTEdit-Bench, Qwen-Image-MTEdit outperformed other open-source models, demonstrating the dataset's effectiveness in enhancing multi-turn image editing capabilities. The results show that MTEdit not only reduces visual drift but also significantly improves model performance in complex editing tasks.

Developer Recommendations

For developers working on multi-turn image editing, Hugging Face recommends:

  1. Leverage MTEdit Dataset: Fine-tune existing models to improve multi-turn editing capabilities.
  2. Focus on MTEdit-Bench: Evaluate model performance across different scenarios and identify areas for improvement.
  3. Combine with Other Technologies: For example, integrate reinforcement learning or generative adversarial networks to further enhance editing quality.
