Summary:AWS has launched Amazon Bedrock AgentCore payments, a new capability that enables AI agents to make on-demand payments with infrastructure-enforced spending limits. This service integrates with payment protocols like x402 and platforms such as Coinbase and Stripe, providing a managed way for agents to handle transactions. Companies like Incarna have already reduced their payment system integration time from months to days using this service. AgentCore payments offers a secure and efficient payme

AWS Launches AgentCore Payments: Revolutionizing AI Agent Payment and Transaction Management

When AI agents operate, they often need to purchase services to complete tasks, such as model inference, API calls, accessing web content, or interacting with other agents. These purchases are typically high-frequency and low-value, sometimes amounting to less than a cent per transaction, and occur within the agent's operational loop without human intervention.

The Challenge: High-Frequency, Low-Value Payments

Traditional payment networks are not designed for sub-cent transactions. Building a custom payment system involves solving multiple challenges, including where funds are held, how each transaction is signed, supporting emerging payment protocols like x402, and preventing the agent from overspending.

AgentCore Payments Features

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore payments addresses these issues through the following features:

  • Managed Wallets: Incarna provisions each agent's wallet using the Coinbase CDP connector. The customer owns the wallet and grants Incarna delegated authorization to use it.
  • Native Protocol Handling: When a paid endpoint responds with HTTP 402 (“Payment Required”), the agent uses AgentCore payments to make the payment over x402, signing the transaction with the configured wallet and returning cryptographic proof to the merchant.
  • Infrastructure-Layer Spending Governance: AgentCore payments enforces limits outside the model, so the agent cannot exceed them even if its prompt is manipulated.
  • Auditable Settlement: Payments settle in a stablecoin. Incarna uses USDC on the Base network, and each transaction is verifiable on-chain.

Real-World Application

Incarna has utilized AgentCore payments to enable pay-per-inference for model inference. BlockRun, as a pay-as-you-go inference router, serves over 90 models from more than 15 providers over the x402 protocol. AgentCore payments works with x402-compatible endpoints, including Amazon Bedrock inference endpoints, allowing the Incarna team to reduce the time to add x402 payment support from months to days and put an end-to-end pay-per-inference flow into production.

Results and Impact

  • Development Efficiency: Incarna completed the AgentCore payments integration in three days (one day for building, two days for testing), a significant improvement over the originally scoped two to three months.
  • Payment Volume: During the beta, agents processed over 1,000 payments ranging from $0.001 to $0.05 per call, each settling individually on-chain.

Future Outlook

AgentCore payments provides a governed, on-demand way for agents to pay for the services they use. BlockRun and Incarna demonstrate how it comes together end-to-end: an agent that pays for inference, a provider that meters and settles it, and an identity that owns the transaction. For developers building agents that need to buy services as they run, AgentCore payments offers a single, governed integration point to add that capability.

Developer Recommendations

  1. Set Up AgentCore payments: Create a Payment Manager with your wallet connection and spending policies. Connect a Coinbase CDP wallet as your credential provider.
  2. Open a Payment Session with Your Budget: Before the agent starts a task, open a session with a spending cap that fits the workload. The agent transacts within that ceiling, and the infrastructure enforces it.
  3. Call a Paid Endpoint: Point your agent at an x402-compatible service (like BlockRun). When the endpoint returns HTTP 402, call ProcessPayment with the payment details. AgentCore payments handles the signing and returns proof the agent can present to access the service.

Conclusion

AgentCore payments offers a secure and efficient payment solution for AI agents, enabling them to transact in a controlled manner. This technology not only enhances development efficiency but also opens up new possibilities for AI agents in real-world applications.
