LangSmith BYOC Expands to AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud

LangChain is rolling out LangSmith BYOC across the three major public clouds: general availability on AWS, with beta availability on Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Under the deployment model described by the company, LangChain continues to operate the platform, while traces, evaluation data, and agent deployments remain inside the customer's cloud account.

This is not a new model or agent framework release. It is an enterprise deployment model for an AI observability and evaluation platform. BYOC, short for Bring Your Own Cloud, aims to preserve the LangSmith workflow for tracing, evaluation, and deployment without forcing sensitive workloads into a vendor-hosted data plane.

Where Data Resides and Who Operates the Platform

The central idea is a separation between the customer-controlled data plane and the vendor-managed control plane:

  • The customer hosts the data: Resources required for traces, evaluations, and agent deployments run in the customer's cloud account, allowing existing IAM, encryption, audit, and storage controls to remain in place.
  • The vendor operates the software: LangChain manages application lifecycle support, platform upgrades, and ongoing operation, reducing the maintenance burden associated with a fully self-hosted deployment.
  • The two planes still communicate: The control plane must securely reach services in the customer account, making connectivity, federated identity, credential rotation, and least-privilege authorization critical.

BYOC does not automatically eliminate data egress. Any telemetry, error reporting, license validation, or auxiliary endpoint that calls outside the customer environment must be included in data-classification and audit policies. Buyers should determine which telemetry fields leave the account, which controls can disable them, and how the system behaves during cross-tenant or regional failures.

Engineering Benefits and Costs

The primary benefit is data residency and platform control rather than better inference performance. Regulated industries, cross-border operations, and organizations with mature cloud-governance programs can avoid moving sensitive traces into a separate vendor data plane and can keep databases, object stores, and key management within established security boundaries.

That benefit comes with redistributed responsibility. Customers still pay for cloud resources and retain responsibility for networking, IAM, capacity planning, and troubleshooting. LangChain owns application-level operations, not the availability of the underlying cloud infrastructure. A production rollout should validate at least the following:

  1. p95 and p99 latency between the control plane and customer-hosted data services;
  2. Whether trace ingestion becomes a bottleneck during high-concurrency bursts;
  3. Backup, point-in-time recovery, and restore procedures for databases, object stores, and search indexes;
  4. Upgrade compatibility, rollback procedures, and version-pinning policies;
  5. Data export, long-term archival, and cross-region disaster recovery.

Azure and Google Cloud remain in beta and should not be placed directly on a critical path with a strict availability requirement. AWS's move to GA changes the support stage but does not, by itself, define the service boundary; teams still need to review the applicable SLA and contract terms.

Practical Value for Agent Engineering Teams

BYOC is most attractive to teams that already operate a mature cloud platform with established identity, networking, and database security. Installing it inside an existing AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud estate can reduce friction between LangSmith and corporate security controls.

It is not equivalent to full self-hosting, however. Customers retain cloud expenses, resource configuration, and much of the integration burden, while also accepting the release constraints of a vendor-managed control plane. For small teams, LangSmith's hosted offering is generally easier to operate. BYOC earns its additional cost only when data residency, existing IAM integration, or regulatory audit requirements are hard constraints.

Pre-Deployment Checklist

  • Identify exactly which cloud resources hold trace, evaluation, and deployment data;
  • Prefer workload identities or short-lived credentials over long-lived, high-privilege keys;
  • Allowlist and audit outbound traffic from the control plane;
  • Separate GA and Beta commitments by SLA, upgrade cadence, and support coverage;
  • Load-test peak ingestion with production-like trace volumes;
  • Rehearse credential rotation, regional failure, and platform rollback;
  • Verify that exported data can be searched and analyzed independently of LangSmith.

The meaningful advance in LangSmith BYOC is not a new AI capability but a more flexible deployment boundary for AI observability. It addresses data residency without eliminating cloud operations overhead; whether it is worthwhile ultimately depends on whether the governance benefit exceeds the additional infrastructure and integration cost.
